An Honest Review of the Yosukata Wok

I’m a sucker for a big bowl of chicken fried rice, but when the food-delivery-service fees cost more than my entree I’m inclined to DIY it. A solid recipe and a well-oiled wok are all you need, and you too can live out your stir-fry dreams.

Although Yosukata sent this Black Carbon Steel Wok to me for review, all opinions here are my honest thoughts. You can buy this wok on amazon for under $60.

Yosukata Carbon Steel Skillet: How I Tested

Trying out this wok involved quite a bit of effort. I wanted to give you a thorough and complete assessment, giving you insights that go beyond what you might find just by reading reviews.

Shipping Packaging and Flaws Test:

I inspected the wok closely for any signs of damage. The wok and wood handle were both in perfect condition. I did notice some fingerprints in the protective coating but in total transparency, they could 100% be my own. The protective coating needs to be washed off anyway, so it’s a nonissue.

Aesthetic Vibe Check:

I love the look of this wok. The round bottom is not only functional, but beautiful. The wood handle and welded carbon steel helper handle offer a slightly rustic or worldly vibe. 

Seasoning Test:

The Yosukata carbon steel skillet doesn’t arrive pre-seasoned, or assembled. Attaching the handle is quick and simple though. The seasoning process was well a process but the instructions were clear and easy to follow.

Verdict: The seasoning was even and worked impressively well on the first use. I had no issues with sticking. 

Stir-fry Test:

What better way to test this wok than with my go-to chicken stir fry! (Please note this is not an authentic recipe – more like a quick weeknight delicious meal) 

Verdict: 8/10 The chicken seared beautifully without burning and the veggies sauteed perfectly. The round bottom base was a little challenging to use on my gas stove burners which are designed like a plus symbol + centered over each burner.

Durability Test: 

I have never dropped a wok, but I have banged a few against a countertop when moving too quickly in the kitchen. To replicate this (and not destroy my granite countertops) I dropped the wok from 2 ft onto my concrete patio. I dropped from an upright position and from a 90-degree-sideways position. 

Verdict: Durable af with 0 warping or dents.

Daily Life Test: 

I’ve used this wok exclusively for the last two months (as we don’t naturally use a wok often). Time and time again the food I cooked slid across the surface, the pan heated quickly and evenly, and tossing fried rice and chow mein was easy with the round design and helper handle. 

Both my husband (who’s a foot taller and significantly stronger than me) and I find the wok to feel heavy and a bit cumbersome due to its size. If not for the sturdy handle and helper handle I would give this wok a lower score. 

Verdict: 7/10 for a blend of cooking excellence vs my weak, short arms.

How To Clean A Yosukata Wok

Keeping your wok clean is simple, but important. Here are some tips on how to clean and maintain your Yosukata wok:

  • Wash: After using a carbon steel wok, allow it to cool down before washing it. Never place a hot wok in cold water, unless you want your wok to warp. Use hot water and a soft sponge or non-metallic scrubber rather than metallic scrubbers, as they can leave residue on the wok.
  • Dry: After washing, dry your wok thoroughly with paper towels. Make sure to dry the wok completely to prevent rust from forming. You can even pop it back on your stove at a low heat to cook out any remaining moisture.
  • Season: Seasoning is crucial for maintaining the non-stick surface and preventing rust. To season the wok, heat it on high until it starts to smoke. Add a small amount of a high-temp oil and swirl it around, making sure to coat the entire surface. Let the wok cool down before wiping it thoroughly with paper towels.

To prevent any rust, store your wok in a dry place. Avoid stacking other heavy pans or lids on top of it to prevent any warping.

Pricing Sweet Spot: Why $60 Is a Steal

The negative reviews were all on Amazon and many were admittedly due to user error in seasoning or washing carbon steel. Some did mention the size and weight of the wok makes it difficult to handle and some didn’t care for the round bottom.

This method helps prevent oil from pooling and dripping. Just be sure your pan is all steel—no plastic parts, especially in the handle—or you might end up with a melted mess.
